CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
“You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished here. You’ve created a space that is not just accessible but welcoming, architecture for a wide range of bodyminds that encourages the performance of all kinds of ways of moving through the world. This space is Disability Culture in action.” —Jim Ferris, poet and Disabled activist
This project was realized in partnership with ArtPrize, and the generous support of Kate Pew Wolters, and was supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs, and Experience Grand Rapids.
DisArt: Disability Drag Show Drag Syndrome + Beauty Beyond Drag Productions
London-based Drag Syndrome, a professional troupe whose members perform in drag and have Down syndrome, was scheduled to perform on September 7, 2019. After this programming was announced the owner of the building revoked permission for the performance, forcing DisArt to find another venue. The event sold out prompting an encore performance.
